I spent years as a freelance frontend engineer, starting in 2019. The software work itself goes back more than seven years. These days I've stepped back from client work and I'm building my own apps and web tools.
The through-line is simple: some files shouldn't leave the device. OnVault does OCR without cloud sync. GAZO Hub converts and compresses images in the browser. I don't start from “upload, it's convenient.” I start from “what if I don't want it uploaded.”
Why this site exists
Most image tools ask for an upload first. Work screenshots, assets that aren't public yet, personal photos. I wouldn't put those on a server I don't control.
So GAZO Hub runs in the browser, with Canvas and WebAssembly. Image files don't go to a server. Offline use is a side effect of that, not a slogan. It also means I can't process them on my side. Fine. I'd rather not see them.
Background
On client work I stayed in frontend for a long time. On my own products I do the planning, the code, the design, the release, and the fixes after. Not everything ships well. On note I've written about web apps that nobody used.
I've travelled every year for more than a decade, including a trip around the world. Over 40 countries and 100 cities. Confusing ATM fees and exchange rates are why I built NomadCalc and Travel ATM Cost. Travel stories are not the source of the numbers. Fees come from official tables. Local screens are for explaining the flow.
Other things under the same name
Besides GAZO Hub I ship tools that keep data on-device, or help you decide on the ground. They aren't all image tools.
- GAZO Hub
In-browser convert, compress, and resize. This site.
- OnVault
Offline OCR. Read and file documents on the device.
- NomadCalc
Currency conversion for travellers. iOS app and Chrome extension.
- Travel ATM Cost
Overseas ATM fee comparison, with sources and an author page.
- SayScan
A translation app for signs, receipts, and ATM screens.
- Book Leaf / KASANE / LOFI WINDOW
Reading notes, a habit timer, and a site that turns live video lo-fi. The build notes are on note.
Corrections
App Store and Chrome Web Store size specs are taken from official docs, with a review date. When a spec changes, I update that page. Size pages get a pass every quarter (January, April, July, October). Test numbers get remeasured when the tool changes.
If you find an error, use the contact form. I check the fact, fix the page, and keep it in the changelog. Bigger corrections get a note at the top. I don't write estimates as if they were confirmed.
How to check that images aren't uploaded
You can verify this in your own browser. It isn't a trust-me claim.
- Open DevTools (F12, or Cmd + Option + I)
- In the Network tab, turn on Disable cache
- Upload an image and run a tool
- Confirm there is no upload of the image file
Google Analytics beacons still go out. They don't include image data. Details are in the privacy policy.
